When things become a sucess, I don't know, I feel like I missed them, I blink, and all of a sudden they're a huge success.  Like the TV show "Modern Family."  I decided I'd give it a chance because I love Ed O'Neil from "Married...with Children," and of course the pilot killed.  By the end of the first season people were declaring it one of the best sitcoms ever, it had enormous Emmy buzz...and I just feel like I missed the moment where "Modern Family" became this massive success.  I love the show though, it's one of the few new things on TV I watch nowadays.  That's why I feel accomplished when I'm able to see a superstar being born in Tom Hardy when I watched "The Dark Knight Rises" last week.  "Inception" already made him a breakout star back in 2010, but his performance as Bane really cemented his celebrity status.  I don't even like that word "celebrity," it cemented his status as a gifted,...

THOUGHTS ON MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN

Reporting on every celebrity death would be tireless, constant work I don't know that I could do.  News anchors have to report on it, journalists...but I'm not sure I could do it.  The sadness and confusion of a celebrity death can unite people (see Michael Jackson's death) in mourning of that person, and that's what I think is really important to do now.  Sadly people will forget about Mr. Duncan's passing in a week, consumed with other news being shoved down their throat.  But the beautiful thing about an actor passing is that their legacy can always be carried on in the films they appear in, and that will never end. Oscar/Golden Globe nominee Michael Clarke Duncan died on September 3, 2012.  I turned on the TV to CNN to find this news, and it just broke me.  Being a movie critic means you get crucified if you haven't seen a certain movie in popular favor.  I hate when I tell people I'm a movie fan, and follow it up with "Oh, but I haven't see...

GOLDEN GLOBE PREDICTIONS 2014!

Well, my nomination predictions weren't too hot, but the Globes do tend to switch up genres without notice. ("Before Midnight" a comedy? "Llewyn Davis" a comedy/musical?) But now that it's been established, watch as  I attempt to navigate the major awards wins this Sunday. A list of all the nominees are HERE . DRAMA: ACTOR: There's no weak link here, but Ejiofor is expected to blow everyone out of the water for his performance of an unjustly kidnapped slave. But points for the Globes' originality: Idris Elba's Mandela was a left-field choice. ACTRESS: British modern legends dominate this category, and if it was up to me the prize would be Blanchett's for her arresting, spot-on American, whiny performance, but I see Hollywood rewarding Bullock for her turn as a panting astronaut (I'm kidding, she was great, too).
