MY TOP 5 FILMS OF 2010!

2010 was not a fantastic year for movies like 2008 was, but it did provide some very good offerings, especially in the field of animation. Here are my 5 favorite films of the year two-thousand and ten:

5. "How to Train Your Dragon"
I remember seeing the poster for this while seeing "The Blind Side" and thought that it looked unbelievably lame. I was very wrong, this is a beautifully designed and produced film for children and adults alike. The story is fairly original, and the Scotish voice talent is very humorous! The scenes where Hiccup (the main character) gets to know Toothless (the dragon in question) is both comical and touching, and the film is not at all regular kid-fluff, making it my #2 favorite animated film of the year.

4. "The King's Speech"
The likely Best Picture winner for this year is a very moving and emotional piece of classic drama. Performances are spot-on, especially Colin Firth's masterful art of stuttering, and it really strikes a chord with anyone who's faced a problem similar to it, and how you can eventually conquer with a little help from the people who care about you.

3. "Toy Story 3"
Possibly the best threequel ever made? Maybe. This animated tale of a group of toys resonates with people everywhere, and the literally billion dollars it made only supports my statement. It is the best of the trilogy, and made me think when I had to grow up and eventually put my toys away...it's kind of a sad time. It's also the only movie that made me cry this year, which I'm man enough to admit, the (SPOILER) inferno scene left not a dry eye in the audience. Plus, a toy jailbreak scenario? Pixar geniuses do it again.

2. "Inception"
The most original film of the year hands down! So complicated there should be a law that you have to see it twice to even sort of understand what you saw the first time. I'm going to just throw this out there and say movies today don't make you think. This movie got the gears moving, and I may never dream the same way. Christopher Nolan, you can do no wrong.

1. "The Social Network"
The movie of the year. The interesting thing about it is it really isn't that much about Facebook the website half a billion people use. It's about what 7 billion people go through at least once in their lives, the trials and tribulations of friendship, betrayal and eventual disowning. Jesse Eisenberg perfectly captures a cold and emotionally dead Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield (who got snubbed of an Oscar nom) a loyal friend who is eventually stabbed in the back, and Justin Timberlake surprisingly good as Sean Parker, Napster co-founder and charmer extraordinaire. The screenplay, the dynamite score, the performances, there are too many to choose from from this modern masterpiece. Status update: "The Social Network" IS the movie of 2010.

Honorable Mentions:
"Alice in Wonderland"- This underrated film from Tim Burton got plenty of money and love for its technical aspects (3 Oscar noms, all in technical categories) but I really appreciated the film, the visual effects and Depp's performance.

"The Other Guys"- Easily the year's funniest movie, Will Ferrel is of course, at the top of his hilarious game, but Mark Wahlberg matches him in his equally funny straight-man role.

"True Grit"- This Best Picture nominee didn't quite live up to the original '69's classic status, and Jeff Bridges (also an Oscar nominee for this movie) is at times really hard to understand, but the whole film is well put-together. I promise Hailee Steinfeld is going to become a household name; this film shows her exceptional talent, standing her own against Bridges and Matt Damon.
