OSCAR PREDICTIONS 2013!

It's that time of year again, the Oscars are less than a week away!  I have to admit choosing the "will wins" have been particularly difficult to choose.  So let me not dilly dally, time to discuss what will win the coveted Oscar on February 24th:

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: (Lincoln, Life of Pi, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook)
Should Win: "Lincoln"'s poetic and difficult, 19th century jargon really deserves it.  It flowed so beautifully, and was the only movie this year that made me feel that way.  Just listen to Tommy Lee Jones bashing a congressman who's anti-13th amendment!
Will Win: "Pi," "Playbook" and "Beasts" all had wildly original premises, and executed perfectly, but "Lincoln" should have this award.  Look for "Playbook" to pull an upset though; Russel won a BAFTA for it.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: (Moonrise Kingdom, Django Unchained, Flight, Zero Dark Thirty, Amour)
Should Win: Take in mind I haven't seen "Flight" or "Amour," but they don't have a chance.  "Amour's" prize is just seeing a foreign film get so many nods.  "Django" and "ZDT" both had the most controversial scripts of the year, so it should go to either of them, but I'd love to see Tarantino make another speech after his awkward 1995 one.
Will Win:  In an interview with Howard Stern, Tarantino said he didn't mind losing Best Picture to "The Hurt Locker" in 2010, but was mad he lost best original screenplay to Mark Boal.  Well he's up against Boal again, but Tarantino's been winning this award so much he's a given.

ANIMATED FILM: (Brave, ParaNorman, Frankenweenie, Wreck-It Ralph, The Pirates! Band of Misfits)
Should Win: "ParaNorman" brought me a lot of joy in theaters this year, though I am a sucker for stop-motion.  "Frankenweenie" is also a perfectly fine choice, and sadly I haven't seen "The Pirates!" or "Wreck-It Ralph."
Will Win: Since I know "ParaNorman" won't win, I'm rooting for "Ralph" to take it because of the positive things I've heard from almost everyone.  But the logical part of my brain tells me "Brave," one of Pixar's few average offerings, will be crowned on Sunday.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS: (Anne Hathaway, Helen Hunt, Jacki Weaver, Sally Field, Amy Adams)
Should Win: I haven't seen Hunt or Adams' performances, but I know they're not going to win.  Neither is Weaver, so that leaves it to...well Hathaway.  There's talk of Field making an upset, but don't count on it, though I loved her thoroughly stressed out Mary Todd.  This is Hathaway's night!
Will Win: "I dreamed a dream of time gone byyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy..."

SUPPORTING ACTOR: (Tommy Lee Jones, Christoph Waltz, Alan Arkin, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Robert De Niro)
Should Win: This is the absolute hardest race to call: Waltz won the BAFTA and the Globe, Hoffman won the Critic's Choice Award, and Jones won the SAG!  This is too close!  De Niro was subtle, Jones was brash, but for me, Waltz was just right, exuding that confidence and swagger like his Nazi role in "Basterds."
Will Win:  Right now, I'll be honest, this is a sheer guess, but I'm thinking the Academy's gonna side with me on this and give Waltz his second Oscar! (Though Leo should be the one up here in a beautifully uncharacteristic role.)

ACTRESS: (Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Quvenzhane Wallis, Naomi Watts, Emmanuelle Riva)
Should Win: Chastain and Wallis both carry their films on their backs with an electric confidence!  Lawrence's Tiffany is all about pulling out the little nuances that make us all a little weird, but Watts had the largest challenge, acting devastated and unsure if her whole world had just crumbled.  Her tsunami screams, clinging to a palm tree are Oscar worthy alone.
Will Win:  In the beginning it looked like it was Chastain's to lose, but now I'm starting to believe Lawrence will be receiving it, and at age 22 that's nothing to sneeze at.

ACTOR: (Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman)
Should Win:  Day-Lewis' portrayal of an American giant is already legendary, and makes you seriously question how Liam Neeson would've approached it.
Will Win: Subtract Lewis from the equation and Jackman  would be a front runner for sure.  But...we all know who's winning.

DIRECTOR: (Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee, Benh Zeitlin, David O. Russell, Michael Haneke)
Should Win:  It's Ben Affleck's year, as he's already won the....wait...oh yeah.  Well Bigelow surely deserves it for staging the bin Laden rai....her too?  How about Hooper? Tarantino? Nolan? NO? NO? ACADEMY!  Why did you leave us with this?!  Well, Spielberg and Lee both made striking cinematic achievements, so I'll go ahead and give it to Lee for adapting the un-adaptable since Steven's won twice already.  Just 'cause.
Will Win: Probably Spielberg.  Even though Day-Lewis is one of cinema's most loved actors, good direction was certainly behind that top hat-fitted character too.

PICTURE: (Argo, Amour, Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Django Unchained, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Lincoln)
Should Win: Besides the yet-seen "Amour," I have to say everyone of these films has surprised me and won me over in its own unique way.  I even saw "Les Miz" twice, dude.  That's 5 hours of Russel Crowe "singing."  The boldest, gutsiest movie of the year, and the movie I now call one of my favorites is "Django Unchained," but I don't want it to win.  Tarantino will make more legendary movies to come, and I'm sure he'll be rewarded in time.  This is Affleck's year.  This is the year he showed he is a certified boss at directing, with a trilogy of classics under his belt.  This is the year he redeemed himself (kinda) for "Gigli," "Surviving Christmas" and "Pearl Harbor."  This is the year he got robbed for the director slot, so now they have, they MUST give him Best Picture, if just for a consolation prize.
Will Win:  It's been unstoppable this awards season, getting the SAG, BAFTA, Globe and Critic's Choice Award for Best Picture.  "Argo" will be awarded the best movie of 2012, and join the ranks of "Ben-Hur," "The Sound of Music" and "All Quiet on the Western Front."  It's deserved.

P.S. Seth MacFarlane's gonna kill it.
