GOLDEN GLOBES 2023 PREDICTIONS!

Hey, I still remember the password to this thing! Here are my picks for all the major film categories come this Tuesday night, with red indicating who I think will win, and an asterisk denoting my personal pick.

BEST DRAMA: Despite the presence of two blockbuster behemoth sequels that saved 2022's box office, I think the only thing close to topping Elvis is Spielberg's movie memoir of his childhood. The HFPA are known to love the bigger, flashier choice of the nominees (see: Revenant, Bohemian Rhapsody and 1917's victories just in the past decade), and I wouldn't be mad at all at Baz Luhrmann's gloriously dizzying look at the King's downfall.

  • Avatar: The Way of Water
  • Elvis
  • The Fabelmans
  • Tár*
  • Top Gun: Maverick
BEST COMEDY/MUSICAL: No musicals this year compared to 2021's embarrassment of riches in the category, but this is one of the best lineups in years, with, *gasp* each nominee in this category actually generically listed by IMDb as a comedy. Someone needs an award for that alone. While Banshees got overwhelming love from the Globes, I think it's EEAAO's to lose. It was the phenomenon of the year, and I can't wait to see it get rewarded this season.
  • Babylon
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once*
  • Glass Onion
  • Triangle of Sadness
BEST ACTOR: DRAMA: I think it's a pretty clear shot for Butler to strut away with this prize, since his main competition Farrell is over in Comedy. Fraser essentially gave the finger to his even appearing at the ceremony, so it would certainly be...awkward if he won, though deserving.
  • Austin Butler, Elvis*
  • Brendan Fraser, The Whale
  • Hugh Jackman, The Son
  • Bill Nighy, Living
  • Jeremy Pope, The Inspection
BEST ACTRESS: DRAMA: Since it's poised to be Blanchett vs. Yeoh come Oscar night, this only makes sense, and her performance is genuinely Oscar worthy (I just think it's Yeoh's time to shine and Blanchett already has two trophies at home!). I'm glad de Armas is getting love for her role in one of the most bashed arthouse movies of 2022, because she was one of the only good aspects of it.
  • Cate Blanchett, Tár*
  • Olivia Colman, Empire of Light
  • Viola Davis, The Woman King
  • Ana de Armas, Blonde
  • Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
BEST ACTOR: COMEDY/MUSICAL: No one's even coming close to beating Farrell here, but in another universe, Fiennes' win for his diabolical, resigned chef would've been a spectacular win.
  • Diego Calva, Babylon
  • Daniel Craig, Glass Onion
  • Adam Driver, White Noise
  • Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin*
  • Ralph Fiennes, The Menu
BEST ACTRESS: COMEDY/MUSICAL: If Farrall is considered a shoo-in, Yeoh's trophy should already be mailed to her at this point.
  • Lesley Manville, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
  • Margot Robbie, Babylon
  • Anya Taylor-Joy, The Menu
  • Emma Thompson, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
  • Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once*
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Good rule of awards season is never to count out Brad Pitt, but Quan's extremely versatile, hilarious and heartbreaking Waymond is already the winner in the people's hearts. It helps that the two supporting Banshees boys (very much deserving to be here, though) cancel themselves out.
  • Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Brad Pitt, Babylon
  • Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once*
  • Eddie Redmayne, The Good Nurse
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: The safe bet here is probably JLC, despite her tone deaf response to nepo babies being allowed to exist. Her role is super brief and memorable, but something inside me is telling me Queen Bassett will be rewarded for her regal performance as Wakanda's stronghold. That said, this has been my favorite category to watch this season so far, and the Oscar lineup could be legendary,
  • Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Dolly de Leon, Triangle of Sadness*
  • Carey Mulligan, She Said
BEST DIRECTOR: While I desperately hope Spielberg won't sweep Director this year just because this was his pet project, this is the same Academy who gave Scorsese this prize for Hugo many moons ago. My prayer is Daniels are able to put their hot dog hands on Oscar come March 12.
  • James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water
  • Daniels, Everything Everywhere All at Once*
  • Baz Luhrmann, Elvis
  • Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
BEST SCREENPLAY: Main competitor EEAAO's screenplay can be a little overwhelming on first watch, but it only takes one screening of Banshees to see the remarkable nuances McDonagh pulls from his simple fable. I'm hoping Daniels have Director on lock so McDonagh can finally pick up his long-awaited screenplay trophy.
  • Tár
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • The Banshees of Inisherin*
  • Women Talking
  • The Fabelmans
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE: Total shot in the dark here, and the only thing I've seen is Turning Red. But Pinocchio has appeared on more top ten lists than any animated fare, and we know the Globes like stop motion with Missing Link's surprise win.
  • Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio
  • Inu-Oh
  • Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
  • Turning Red
