OSCAR SURPRISES AND SNUBS 2011!
Who ever thought we'd be calling Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig Oscar nominees? Who thought "Young Adult," "Shame" and "J. Edgar" would be left with nothing? Not me. I review the major categories in surprises and snubs.
SURPRISES:
Picture- While every predictor seemed set on 7 nominees this year, the academy turned in another twist with 9 nominees. While "The Tree of Life" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" both came as shocks to people, I'd just like to mention this Best Picture list is the Critic's Choice Award Best Picture nominees minus "Drive," which I'll get into later.
Actor & Actress- It's an understatement to say Demian Bichir of "A Better Life" getting nominated for best actor, beating out Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender. Who is this guy? We'll find out as award season progresses I suppose. Gary Oldman's inclusion was good to here, for "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." The only surprise in best actress was Rooney Mara's (Dragon Tattoo) name, beating out Conan O'Brien....whoops, I mean Tilda Swinton for "We Need To Talk About Kevin."
Sup. Actor & Actress- Even though he had a fine role I still never expected the words Oscar nominee Jonah Hill to come from anyone's mouth. The Apatow-riding former fat bro scored a nomination for "Moneyball," another surprise coming from "E.L.I.C." was Max von Sydow's (aka THE EXORCIST) performance as a mute. Nick Nolte was a welcome (and very, very deserved) nomination for "Warrior." Nolte could easily take this award home were it not for Plummer's seniority.
Animated Film & Screenplays- The animated film list left me with a headache. 2 movies called "A Cat in Paris" and "Chico & Rita" edged out critically acclaimed animated movies like "Arthur Christmas?" At least "Rango" got a nom, like I predicted when I first saw it. Screenplay noms saw unrecognized movies like "Margin Call," the foreign "A Separation" and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" get in the spotlight. This is also where Wiig earned her best original screenplay!
SNUBS:
Picture- Everyone has their own opinion, but personally I felt plain angered "Deathly Hallows 2" was left out. NO ONE saw this movie and went home saying "meh." It was the movie of the year! Other contenders left out were "Ides of March," "Drive" and "Bridesmaids."
